Guideline values as a planning aid

For conservative planning, allow around 8 Mbps per device for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. These are not guaranteed technical minimums but practical starting points. Some streams need less, others considerably more. Include extra headroom because Wi-Fi, protocol overhead and other household devices affect available performance.

Calculate multiple devices correctly

When two devices use Full HD at the same time, do not calculate only 15 plus 15 Mbps. A headroom of around 20 to 30 per cent makes the plan more robust. With three devices, video calls, downloads or cloud backups, the reserve should be even larger. The DeutschlandTV speed check performs this calculation automatically.

Why the advertised speed does not always reach the television

A 100 Mbps plan does not mean the TV receives 100 Mbps at all times. Distance from the router, radio interference, old Wi-Fi standards, powerline and simultaneous use can reduce real performance. Measure as close as possible to the playback device and at the time of day when you usually watch.

Bandwidth is not everything

Buffering can occur despite high speed if the connection is inconsistent. Packet loss, latency spikes or an overloaded player can interrupt data flow. Troubleshooting should therefore examine the network, device and app separately.

Practical rule for the household

Prefer a stable, slightly slower connection over a high maximum speed with strong fluctuations. For several rooms, LAN, good 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a properly configured mesh system are often more important than simply upgrading to a faster plan.

Practical tip: For technical problems, change only one variable at a time and test again. This keeps the cause traceable.
